J. Witbeck is a multi-instrumentalist and music educator living in Northampton, Massachusetts. He specializes as a freelance tuba and bass player, locally and internationally, at countless venues, studios, and private functions. His mastery of diverse music styles has him recorded currently on 26 different albums and projects, one of which was Grammy nominated. These experiences have always been brought proudly to the excitement and encouragement of his young, up and coming students in their lessons. As a graduate of Westfield State University for Music Education he achieved the Academic Excellence Award in Music Theory and Composition. Prior private studies with The Community Music School in Springfield, MA had lead to three consecutive scholarships to The National Guitar Workshop for electric bass.
As an educator with over 10 years experience he has taught music, among other subjects, at a number of well established schools and institutions throughout Western Mass. In his experience he has dealt with anything from giving lectures on advanced linear harmonic substitutions to singing a shoe-tying song for Kindergarten students. All these musical events have lead to him being interviewed for the newspaper or performing on TV or radio for both his musical integrity and educational philosophy. When he’s not teaching you may find him busking some Jazz out in Northampton, or perhaps running a 10k race with his Sousaphone. Outside of teaching he enjoys spending time outdoors, storytelling in Irish pubs, the occasional karaoke and is currently writing and publishing a book entitled The Tuba Tao.
